Unemployment Rate Slightly Increases

Last month, Michigan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased by one-tenth of a percentage point to 4.8%. The February 2018 rate is unchanged from the February 2017 rate. The state’s unemployment rate last month was seven-tenths of a percentage point above the national average, which was 4.1%.

Highlights of the monthly jobs report include:

  • February was the fifth consecutive month that the overall payroll job count saw gains
  • Since February 2017, construction jobs have risen in the state by 6.9%
  • The 4,000 over-the-month job gain in professional and business services was a continuation of an upward trend in this sector since November
  • From February 2017 to February 2018 payroll jobs in Michigan increased by 52,000 or 1.2%

In the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn market, the February 2018 unemployment rate remained unchanged from the prior month at 4.5%. The market’s unemployment rate has remained below the state’s rate since April 2017.
