House Passes Additional Road Funding

Feb 23, 2018

This week the House unanimously voted to appropriate an additional $175 million for infrastructure improvements in the current fiscal year. The plan uses money left over from a previous state government budget cycle and is already available, therefore they won’t need to make any budget cuts or increase or add fees to fund the proposal. These funds are over and above funding already appropriated in the current fiscal year for infrastructure improvements. Of the total funding, $68.425 million will go to state trunklines, next generation technologies, and service delivery; $68.425 million will go to country road commissions; and the remaining $38.150 million will go to cities and villages. While the Democratic caucuses voted to support the funding, they have stated they would like to see additional funding for improvements. While debating the bill on the House floor, Representative Pam Faris (D-Clio) offered a floor amendment that would have used $75 million from the state’s Rainy Day Fund in addition to the $175 million. However, that amendment was not adopted. The bill will be sent to the Senate for consideration.
