This week, Attorney General Bill Schuette released a public opinion stating that Michigan’s Freedom of Information Act does not state a particular timeframe for which a public body must fulfill a request for information. Instead, the opinion states that a public body must use a “best efforts estimate” when responding to a request.
However, when responding to the initial request for records, the public body has five business days. The initial response would be to grant the request, deny the request, grant the request in part, or extend the period of time the public body has to respond to no more than ten days.
