Yesterday, the House voted in support of a bill package ending driver responsibility fees and forgive outstanding fees. The fees are currently scheduled to be phased-out, however this proposal would speed up the date for removing such fees. Driver responsibility fees are assessed after a driver accumulates a certain number of points on their license or commits certain offenses. The last indication from the Governor’s office is that he is currently opposed to the bills due to the cost to the state. The legislation will be sent to the Senate for further consideration.
In other auto related news, the House of Representatives last night tried to pass legislation reforming Michigan’s auto no-fault system. Despite the support of Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and House Speaker Tom Leonard (R-Dewitt Twp.) the proposal fell short of the votes needed to pass the legislation.
