This week, the Senate passed a House bill that prohibits local units of government from imposing an excise tax on the production, distribution, and sale of food. During the committee process the legislation received support from a wide range of groups, including; the Small Business Association of Michigan, the Associated Food and Petroleum Dealers, the Michigan Restaurants Association, and the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, among numerous other groups.
The legislation was introduced after local governments in other states imposed such a tax on these goods. After seeing the negative impact the tax had on local communities, Representative Rob VerHeulen (R-Walker) introduced his legislation providing protections to Michigan residents.
The bill will be sent to Governor Rick Snyder for final consideration.
