Earlier this week, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released a report detailing measures for preventing the highly invasive Asian carp from entering Lake Michigan. Possibilities include an electric barrier and an underwater sound system. Both systems would be installed at the Brandon Road Lock and Dam near Joliet, Illinois.
In June, an Asian carp was caught just at the edge of the Great Lakes. Representative Lee Chatfield (R-Levering) said, “Asian carp are now closer than ever – just 9 miles from Lake Michigan. We need to take action before they spread throughout Great Lakes waters, destroy our ecosystem and way of life and negatively impact the state economy.”
The report was delivered five months later than expected, and Rep. Chatfield is not the only one hoping for faster action in the future. In a statement released by Governor Rick Snyder on Monday, he said “these harmful invaders are advancing toward the Great Lakes at an alarming rate and we cannot wait any longer to take immediate, decisive action.” Despite these requests, it is estimated that the project would not be completed until 2025.
