Unemployment Rate Declines, Along with the Work Force

Jul 21, 2017

According to numbers released this week by the Department of Technology, Management, and Budget, Michigan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate last month declined to 3.8%, four-tenths of a percentage point lower than the prior month.  This is the lowest the rate has been since August 2000.  Additionally, Michigan’s rate was six-tenths of a percentage point below the national average.

However, the good news of the declining unemployment rate is partially caused by the reduction to the state’s work force.  Last month, 281,000 fewer people were working as compared to August 2000.

In the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn market, the June unemployment rate was 3.8%, a decline of eight-tenths of a percentage point from the prior month.  Despite a decline of 11,000 people in the work force, the total employment level was the highest it has been since April 2007.
