“Good Jobs” Package to be Presented to Governor

Jul 14, 2017

The House and Senate held a summer session on Wednesday, July 12 and both had the “Good Jobs” package on their agendas. Senate Bills 242-244 passed in the House with a 71-35 vote count, followed soon after by the Senate vote to concur in House amendments. The package was created to provide tax incentives to businesses that are either expanding or relocating to Michigan. MLC’s Brendan Ringlever said of the package, “the intent was to put Michigan on a more equal footing with economic incentives as other states in the Midwest.  While some other states have a more robust economic incentive offerings, this will raise Michigan’s profile.”

With 35 nay votes, the three-bill package was clearly met with some opposition. Representative Darrin Camilleri (D-Brownstown Township) issued a statement voicing his concern over tax dollars being taken from hardworking individuals and being given to big businesses. Some small business owners and Republican legislators have also expressed disappointment in the package and fear unhealthy competition. Those in favor of the bills are hopeful that they could provide countless employment opportunities for their constituents.

Despite facing controversy, the “Good Jobs” package garnered enough bipartisan support to pass both chambers and will be presented to the Governor.
