On Tuesday, after much debate, the House of Representatives passed a four-bill package that removes the license and training requirements to carry a concealed pistol. While the legislation retains the background check requirement, it removes other previsions that opponents stated were critical to ensure gun safety in Michigan. Those who support the changes have stated this legislation would simply put these laws in line with open carry laws, for which no permit is needed. Additionally, during the legislative process there has been discussion and debate as to whether the training requirement is necessary. Proponents say that other states see an increase in training when the requirement is removed. Opponents aren’t sure that will be the case and worry the lack of training will create less safety amongst those who chose to carry in a concealed manner. The package will be sent to the Senate for further consideration.
