Tuesday, June 6, was the filing deadline for the open 109th House District in the Upper Peninsula. The district includes the counties of Alger, Luce, Schoolcraft, and a portion of Marquette County. The seat was left vacant following the passing of Representative John Kivela. The seat has a 56% Democratic base, while the Republicans have a shot at winning this seat, it’s likely that the winner of the Democratic primary will also win in November.
The special primary election will be held on Tuesday, August 8 and the special general election will follow on Tuesday, November 7. Candidates have until Friday, June 9 at 4 p.m. to withdraw from the race.
