This week, Governor Rick Snyder signed into law a two-bill package prohibiting pointing a directed energy device, such as a laser pointer, at a plane or train. The package would make the offense punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine up to $10,000. The legislation was inspired by events throughout Michigan, and the United States, where lasers were pointed toward an aircraft pilot or train conductor causing them to be temporarily blinded. Additionally, the legislation includes prohibition of items that transmit focused electromagnetic radiation and sound disrupts from being directed at aircraft and trains. The newly signed laws take effect August 7, 2017.
