Final Approval Given to Criminal Justice Reform Package

Mar 10, 2017

This week, the House of Representatives passed a twenty-bill package from the Senate making reforms to the criminal justice system.  The large package makes several changes to the state’s current system, including:

  • Better tracking and evaluating recidivism data
  • Expedite medical commutation hearings
  • Encourage partnerships with outside volunteers
  • Limit the revocation time that a probation violator would serve for technical violations
  • Allow Judges to shorten a probation term because of good behavior
  • Provide an incentive to probation agents and supervisors to keep probationers out of prison
  • Allow Circuit Courts to institute a swift and sure sanctions court

A similar package was passed by the Senate last session, but did not make its way through the House before the end of the term.  Following approval by the House, the Senate voted to concur in the changes made to the package by the House, and the bills will be presented to Governor Rick Snyder for his approval.
