Bipartisan Legislation Introduced to Deter Courtroom Assaults

Mar 03, 2017

This week, House Democratic Leader Sam Singh (D-East Lansing), Representative Andy Schor (D-Lansing), and Representative Kim LaSata (R-Bainbridge Township) introduced legislation with the goal of preventing courtroom assaults.  Under the bills as introduced, “attempted assault” would be added to the section of law that criminalizes assault on personnel in courtrooms, it would increase the penalties for courtroom assault from a maximum to ten-years to fifteen-years.  The legislation is in response to a deadly courtroom assault in Berrien County in 2015 and an attempted assault in Ingham County in 2016.  The bills have been referred to the House Law and Justice Committee for consideration.
