Senate Passes Energy Package

On Thursday the Senate passed two bills reforming the state’s energy market. Proponents of the package state that it will increase reliability for consumers. Also, in order to get Democratic support for the package, the bill sponsors amended the language to increase the requirement for renewable energy to 15% by 2022. However, while the bill continues to allow for 10% of the market to choose their energy supplier, opponents of the legislation state that requirements within the legislation will eliminate that option for consumers. Several Alternative Electric Suppliers, businesses, school districts, and customers argued against the legislation as they have all benefited from the lower prices that electric choice brings to the market. The bills will be sent to the House for further consideration.
