General Election Overview: 65th House District

Oct 20, 2016

Through the general election on November 8, on every Tuesday and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which due to the voter base the seat could be won by either the Democratic or Republican candidate.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available, in addition to a portion of endorsements (when applicable).

District Overview

The 65th House District includes portions of the counties of Eaton, Jackson, and Lenawee.  The district has a 54% Republican base.

Commentary

Representative Brett Roberts (R-Eaton Township) is running for his second term in office.  The seat flipped into Republican control in 2010, however since that time the GOP base was strengthened after redistricting.

While in office, Representative Roberts serves as vice chair of the Committee on Regulatory Reform and serves as a member of the Committees on Agriculture, Energy Policy, and Workforce and Talent Development.

Democratic Candidate:

  • Bonnie Johnson – Retired corrections officer.

    • General Endorsements – Planned Parenthood of Michigan, Michigan AFL-CIO.

Republican Candidate:

  • Brett Roberts – Small business owner, former Eaton Township Supervisor.

    • Primary Endorsements – Michigan Realtors Association, Small Business Association of Michigan.
    • General Endorsements – Michigan Restaurant Association, Michigan Corn Growers Association.

Libertarian Candidate:
