Through the general election on November 8, on every Tuesday and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which due to the voter base the seat could be won by either the Democratic or Republican candidate.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available, in addition to a portion of endorsements (when applicable).

District Overview

The 39^th House District is located in Oakland County and includes Commerce Township, the City of Wixom, and a portion of West Bloomfield Township.  The district has a 53% Republican base.

Commentary

For several years, Republicans campaigned to get this seat from the Democratic caucus and they were successful with Representative Klint Kesto’s victory in 2012.  However, this district is not a sure win for the GOP this November.  Both the Republican and Democratic caucuses have this race on their target list and both are monitoring closely how Donald Trump might fare in this area, as it will have an impact down the ticket.

Representative Klint Kesto (R-Commerce Township) is serving as the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, in addition to serving as a member on the Committees on Elections, Health Policy, and Regulatory Reform.

Democratic Candidate:

• Michael Stack – Small business owner, sales and marketing.
  • Primary Endorsement – Sierra Club of Michigan.
  • General Endorsements – Planned Parenthood of Michigan, Michigan AFL-CIO.

Republican Candidate:

• Klint Kesto – Former prosecuting attorney.
  • Primary Endorsements – Michigan Realtors Association, Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce, Small Business Association of Michigan.
  • General Endorsements – Police Officers Association of Michigan, Michigan Restaurant Association, Great Lakes Education Project
