Through the general election on November 8, on every Tuesday and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which due to the voter base the seat could be won by either the Democratic or Republican candidate.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available, in addition to a portion of endorsements (when applicable).

District Overview

The 84^th House District is located in Huron and Tuscola Counties.  The district has a fairly solid, 56% Republican base.

Commentary

Representative Ed Canfield (R-Sebewaing) is running for his second term in the House, after winning this seat in 2014 with 59% of the vote.  Despite the strong Republican base, in 2012 a Democratic legislator held this seat.  While the seat should remain in the Republican column, it’s not a sure bet.

During his first term in office, Representative Canfield has served on the Appropriations Committee.  He serves as chairman of the Department of Transportation Subcommittee and is a member of the following subcommittees; Department of Agriculture, Department of Community Health, Department of Corrections, and Department of Education.

Democratic Candidate:

• James Wencel – Public finance, retired Bad Axe School Superintendent.
  • Primary Endorsements – Sierra Club of Michigan, Michigan Township Association.
  • General Endorsement – Michigan AFL-CIO.

Republican Candidate:

• Ed Canfield – Family physician.
  • Primary Endorsements – Michigan Realtors Association, County Road Association of Michigan, Associated Builders and Contractors of Michigan, Michigan Farm Bureau, Right to Life of Michigan.
  • General Endorsement – Michigan Restaurant Association.
