Following Rachael Eubanks’ advice and consent hearing on Wednesday, Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) Chairwoman Sally Talberg presented to the Senate Energy Committee on adequacy and reliability of generation capacity. She began by stating this is a critical issue within the state. As coal and nuclear plants close, she is concerned with the availability of supply, particularly during peak usage times. Ms. Talberg urged the committee to take action now to address potential inadequacy in the future. While Michigan has historically had the ability to purchase additional energy when its needed, she said the supply cushion is decreasing due to plant closures. Commissioner Talberg when asked, stated that if Michigan does nothing, in ten years the state would be dark due to inadequacy of energy supply. She urged the legislature to take action now to stave off what she feels are impending issues surrounding energy adequacy.
