Governor Requests Study on Electrical Connections

Aug 19, 2016

This week Governor Rick Snyder requested a study on the benefits of better electrical connections between Michigan’s two peninsulas and Canada.  The letter to the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) was also signed by Michigan Agency for Energy (MAE) executive director, Valerie Brader.  In the request, they specifically ask MISO to study the near and long-term benefits of electric transmission and generation expansion in MISO’s northern footprint to determine if there is an opportunity to lower costs while increasing reliability in the future.  Additionally, it asks MISO to study connecting Michigan’s eastern Upper Peninsula to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and also strengthening connections between the Upper Peninsula and the northern Lower Peninsula at the Straits of Mackinac down to the northernmost part an existing transmission line near Gaylord.
