General Election Overview: 24th House District

Aug 16, 2016

Through the general election on November 8, on every Tuesday and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which due to the voter base the seat could be won by either the Democratic or Republican candidate.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available, in addition to a portion of endorsements (when applicable).

District Overview
The 24th House District is located in Macomb County and includes Harrison Township and portions of Clinton and Macomb Townships.  The district has a 53% Republican base.

Commentary
Representative Anthony Forlini (R-Harrison Township) is serving his third and final term, leaving this seat open.  In 2010, Representative Forlini unseated a Democratic legislator to win the seat.  After that time the district’s Republican base was made stronger under redistricting, however it remains a competitive seat.  Without an incumbent to run against, the Democratic caucus is expected to make a run for this seat.

Democratic Candidate:

  • Dana Camphous-Peterson – Executive Project Coordinator for Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel, former Macomb County Commissioner, co-founder of a child advocacy center.

    • Primary Endorsements – Sierra Club of Michigan, Michigan AFL-CIO.

Republican Candidate:

  • Steve Marino – Macomb County Commissioner, owner of a public affairs firm, former government relations specialist.

    • Primary Endorsements – Michigan Corn Growers Association, Michigan Realtors Association, Great Lakes Education Project, Small Business Association of Michigan Small BIZ PAC, Michigan Farm Bureau, Senator Jack Brandenburg, Representative Anthony Forlini, Michigan Freedom Network.
