On Monday, Representative Aaron Miller (R-Sherman Township) called on Attorney General Bill Schuette to investigate and provide an opinion regarding the cost savings pertaining to garbage collection in Flint. The current contract for garbage collection was set to expire, the city council voted to extend the contract, but the Flint Mayor instead hired the competing company. The city council is suing the Mayor over this decision.
In his letter to the Attorney General, Representative Miller argues that, under PA 436 of 2012, emergency manager orders must be followed. He goes on to state that fiscal frugality is not being exercised in the city and asks for an opinion on if the state law is being followed. Additionally, Representative Miller claims the city is also violating their own 2015 ordinance, which requires the city to award contracts to the lowest bidder. If the problem continues, Representative Miller states he is open to action from the Legislature.
