Human Trafficking Commission Announces Fall Conference

Jul 22, 2016

This week, the Michigan Human Trafficking Commission, Attorney General Bill Schuette, the State Court Administrative Office, and the Department of Health and Human Services announced they will hold their first conference this fall.  The one-day conference will be held on Thursday, September 29 in Ann Arbor.  “This would be an excellent opportunity for interested parties whose work involves this issue to bring their ideas to the table.  It will provide the platform to meet and speak with those working to end human trafficking and to make important connections, vital to solving the issue within the state,” stated Brendan Ringlever of MLC.

The conference is open to law enforcement, legal professionals, victim service providers, protective services workers, judiciary staff, and other human trafficking related groups.  It will provide an opportunity to collaborate on how to bring further awareness on the issue and to help eliminate the crime in Michigan.  “Human trafficking happens everywhere, including in communities across Michigan, in both urban and rural settings,” said Judge Michelle Rick, a circuit court judge and the Chair of the Human Trafficking Commission Conference Subcommittee. “To effectively recognize and combat this horrific problem, the courts, law enforcement, attorneys, protective services workers, and victim advocates must work together so that traffickers are prosecuted and victims are protected.  This multi-disciplinary conference is a good start for communities who are committed to taking such action.”

The Human Trafficking Commission was created by law in 2014.  The fifteen-member commission is comprised of experts in various fields and is housed within the Attorney General’s office.  Please click here for more information on the commission.
