Governor Calls for Special Election

Jul 08, 2016

This week, Governor Rick Snyder called for a special election in the 11th House District to fill the vacancy created from the passing of Representative Julie Plawecki.  The special primary election to fill the remainder of the term will be held on August 30, and the general election on November 8.  The winner of that election will serve through the end of 2016.

The primary candidate who will run for the next term beginning in January was selected on Thursday evening by Democratic precinct delegates in the 11th House District.  They named Jewell Jones, Inkster City Councilmember to run for the seat.  Mr. Jones won election to the city council last year and at the age of twenty, he become the youngest person to sit on the Inkster City Council.  He’s a student at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, double majoring in political science and finance.  The general election for the next term will also be held on November 8.

The 11th House District is located in Wayne County and includes a portion of the cities of Dearborn Heights, Livonia, and Westland, and Garden and Inkster cities.  The district has a 70% Democratic base and Mr. Jones is all but assured to win the election this November.
