Yesterday the House passed a two-bill package repealing an annual auto insurance tax credit, which cost the state $80 million per-year. The credit is available for catastrophic claims where the injured does not have insurance and was made available due to a mistake in legislation passed in 2012. The elimination of the credit is part of the overall budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Passage of the bill was dependent upon strong support from the Democratic caucus, given that twenty-four Republican members voted in opposition to the legislation. The repeal is effective as of the January 1, 2016 tax year. The bills will be sent to the Senate for consideration.
