This week, the House Oversight and Ethics Subcommittee on Unemployment Reform, approved recommended reforms to the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA), with the goal of making the agency more efficient and effective. The proposed changes aim to correct serious flaws within the agency found in two recent Auditor General reports that were critical of the agency. Among the discrepancies found in the reports were security and accessibility issues with the Michigan Integrated Data Automated System this is utilized by the UIA. Additionally, the report found problems with the phone center that caused 89% of the 263,726 calls made to the center during two separate weeks in 2014 to go unanswered. There were also problems involving computer-based adjudication of claims that led to fraud charges against claimants caused by lack of contact with the claimants.
The subcommittee reported their recommendations within House Bill 4982. The bill has been sent to the full House Oversight and Ethics Committee for further consideration.
