This week the House passed a bipartisan package that would create a state-wide system alerting residents of a public threat, such as an active shooter or an act of terrorism. The system would be designed and managed by the Michigan State Police and would be similar to the Amber Alert system. The legislation also provides penalties for knowingly making a false report of a public threat and creates fines for those convicted in order to reimburse the state and/or local governments for expenses incurred as a result of the false report. The bills have been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee for further consideration.
