U.S. Senators Urge Action on Straits of Mackinac

Apr 22, 2016

This week, United States Senators Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow sent a letter to the State of Michigan urging the Michigan Petroleum Pipeline Task Force to swiftly complete a full and independent risk analysis and alternative assessment of Line 5 following a recent University of Michigan study modeling the disastrous effects of an oil spill in the Straits of Mackinac.  Line 5 is a 645 mile petroleum pipeline running through the Straits of Mackinac.  According to the University of Michigan study, over 700 miles of Great Lakes coastline is potentially vulnerable to a spill from Line 5, depending on the size of the spill and weather conditions.  It also concluded that there is an 80-90% probability that oil would hit the shores of Mackinac Island within 9-12 hours.
