Federal Government Extends Emergency Declaration in Flint

Last Friday, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) approved the state’s request to extend a presidential emergency declaration for the City of Flint and Genesee County until August 14, 2016. The extension authorizes federal supplies of bottled water, water filters, replacement cartridges, and test kits. However, FEMA noted this is the final extension and no further extensions will be granted. According to FEMA, the water is estimated to be safe to drink by May 1. The Governor’s office stated that the date of when water will be determined to be suitable for consumption will be based on coordinated and extensive testing from state, federal, and outside sources.
