Universal Background Checks Passed

The House passed a package of bills reforming Michigan’s gun laws. The three bills amend the state’s firearms laws, the Michigan Penal Code, and the Code of Criminal Procedure to ensure all firearm sales are subject to a background check. Current law requires background checks for all handgun sales, but long guns such as rifles and shotguns are not subject to the requirement. The package was sent to the Senate where they were referred directly to the Committee of the Whole for consideration by the full chamber.
