Leading the Republican Caucuses in 2023

Dec 22, 2022

Like their Democratic counterparts, following November’s general election the Republican caucuses in the House and Senate elected the people who will lead their caucus next term. The Senate elected Senator Aric Nesbitt (R-Lawton) to lead during his second term in the chamber. Throughout his tenure in the legislature, he’s held a number of leadership positions. Currently, he serves as Senator Pro Tempore and chairs the Regulatory Reform and Advice and Consent Committees. While serving in the House, he was the House majority floor leader and chaired the House Energy and Technology Committee. He earned an Economics degree and a master’s in international business from Hillsdale College.

In the House, the Republican caucus elected Representative Matt Hall (R-Marshall) as their leader next term. During his current term, he’s held a number of leadership positions, including chair of the House Tax Policy Committee, chair of the Joint Select Committee on the COVID-19 Pandemic, and chair of the House Republican caucus. Prior to his service in the legislature, he was an attorney in the private sector and served for a time as the West Michigan liaison for the Michigan Attorney General’s office. Representative Hall graduated from Western Michigan University’s Haworth College of Business and earned his Juris Doctor in Advanced Constitutional Advocacy from WMU Cooley Law School.
