On Thursday, the House passed a Senate bill providing a $30 million supplemental appropriation to provide relief for Flint residents on their water bills. A residential customer would be eligible for 65% of the amount billed for water from April 30, 2014 through April 14, 2016 when the current emergency declaration expires. Commercial customers would be eligible for a 20% reimbursement during the same time period. The bill also allows the State Treasurer and the Auditor General to perform audits as they deem necessary. Additionally, the bill requires quarterly reports regarding the distribution of the funds. The legislation has been returned to the Senate for a concurrence vote on the House-passed version of the Senate bill.
Also on Thursday, Governor Rick Snyder announced the City of Flint will receive an additional $2 million from the state to help with infrastructure replacement costs, which will be available for the city to start replacing pipes within the next thirty days.
