General Election Overview: 30th Senate District

Through the general election on November 8^th, the MLC Blog will be highlighting races generally considered swing seats, ones either party could win because of the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

This west Michigan district includes portions of Kent and Ottawa Counties, part of Grand Rapids, among other cities and townships.

Commentary

Republicans have a slight edge heading into the general election with a 53% base. Incumbent Senator Huizenga is running for his first full term after winning a special election for the seat last November. Representative LaGrand is challenging him this November, after serving three terms in the House. Both are strong candidates, with great name recognition, and despite Republicans traditionally having a solid base, this area is moving more toward the middle.

Democratic Candidate:

- Representative David LaGrand – State representative, attorney, former assistant Kent County Prosecutor, former Grand Rapids City Commissioner.

Republican Candidate:

- Senator Mark Huizenga – State senator, former state representative and Mayor of Walker, small business owner.

Libertarian Candidate:

- Theodore Petzold
