General Election Overview: 8th U.S. House District

Aug 25, 2022

Through the general election on November 8, the MLC Blog will be highlighting races generally considered swing seats, ones either party could win because of the voter base.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District

The 8th Congressional District includes Bay and Saginaw counties and portions of Genesee, Midland, and Tuscola counties and includes the City of Flint.

Commentary

The Democratic party has a slight advantage in this district with a 54.8% base. Congressman Kildee is running for reelection, having first been elected to Congress in November 2012. He has a tough reelection campaign on his hands as portions of the district were supportive of former President Trump.  Republican challenger Paul Junge has campaign experience as he ran against current Congresswoman Elisa Slokin in 2020, losing 51% to 47%.

Democratic Candidate:

    • Congressman Dan Kildee – United States Representative, created the Genesee County Land Bank, founded the Center for Community Progress, served on the Flint Board of Education, Genesee County Board of Commissioners, and as Genesee County Treasurer.

Republican Candidate:

    • Paul Junge – Former deputy district attorney, former news anchor, worked at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services during the Trump administration.
