General Election Overview: 7th U.S. House District

Through the general election on November 8, the MLC Blog will be highlighting races generally considered swing seats, ones either party could win because of the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District

The 7^th Congressional District is located in mid-Michigan, including Clinton, Ingham, Livingston, and Shiawassee counties, and portions of Eaton, Genesee, and Oakland counties. The district includes several cities, including Lansing, East Lansing, and Brighton.

Commentary

This race is gaining national attention due to its near 50-50 split, with the Democratic party having only a slight base advantage of 50.4%. Congresswoman Slotkin is running for a reelection in a slightly different district due to redistricting. Senator Tom Barrett has run numerous campaigns in portions of the district, having served two terms in the Michigan House of Representatives and one term in the Michigan Senate.

Democratic Candidate:

- Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin – United States Representative, former CIA Middle East analyst, worked in national security under Presidents Bush and President Obama, former acting assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs.

Republican Candidate:

- State Senator Tom Barrett – State Senator, former State Representative, Army Veteran.
