Through the primary election on August 2 on the MLC Blog we will highlight races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 106^th House District is located in a northern portion of the lower peninsula. It includes Alcona, Alpena, Cheboygan, Montmorency, and Presque Isle Counties and a portion of Oscoda County.

Commentary

This district has a 61% Republican base, making that primary race key to who will represent this district during the 2022-2023 legislative term. Two of the candidates have been elected to serve in local government, giving them campaign experience and name recognition, in their communities.

Democratic Candidate:

- Marie Fielder – Former special education teacher and consultant for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers with special needs. She’s a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

Republican Candidates:

- Geyer Balog – Montmorency County Commissioner.
- Cam Cavitt – Realtor, Cheboygan County Drain Commissioner.
- Larry Hull – Vietnam Veteran, served in the Naval Reserve, owned a private forestry consulting business, former insurance agent.
