Primary Election Overview: 102nd District

Through the primary election on August 2 on the MLC Blog we will highlight races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 102^nd House District is located in west Michigan. It includes portions of Manistee, Mason, Muskegon, and Oceana Counties.

Commentary

This district has a 56% Republican base; thus, the winner of the Republican primary will be in a decent position heading into the general election. After serving one term in the Michigan Senate, Senator VanderWall is running for a second term in the Michigan House in lieu of having to move into a new Senate district. Redistricting significantly restructured his current Senate district making that option less optimal. He previously served one term prior to being elected to the Senate.

Democratic Candidate:

- Brian Hosticka – Assistant public defender, former prosecutor, former private practice attorney.

Republican Candidates:

- Ryan Roberts – Citizen journalist, podcast host.
- Andrew Sebolt – Army veteran, former Oceana County Commissioner.
- Senator Curt VanderWall – State Senator, former Representative, small business owner.
