Governor Signs Education Budget

This, week Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the state budget providing funding for public schools in Michigan for the upcoming fiscal year beginning on October 1. The budget places an emphasis on increasing per-pupil funding, improving school facilities, and addressing the teacher shortage occurring statewide. Specifics within the budget include:

- $9,150 per-pupil funding, the highest state amount ever
- $214 per-pupil mental health and school safety funding
- $250 million for school infrastructure
- $10,000 in tuition for 2,500 future Michigan educators
- An expansion of before and after-school programs
- 1,300 more free preschool slots in the Great Start Readiness Program
- Expanded funding for career and technical education programs by 27%
- Funding for the MI Kids Back on Track program, offering tutoring to help students catch up and get on track
