On Labor Day, anywhere from 30,000 and 60,000 people will gather to participate in the Annual Bridge Walk along the Mackinac Bridge. Visitors will walk five miles between Mackinaw City in the lower peninsula and St. Ignace in the upper peninsula.
The Mackinac Bridge will be closed from 6:30 a.m. to noon for the 59th year of the event. Bob Sweeney of the Mackinac Bridge Authority said “the Authority, The Michigan Department of Transportation, and other state agencies, including the Department of Natural Resources and Secretary of State, have been working hard to get the news of the planned closure so travelers can modify their plans.”
There will be refreshment stations set up at the St. Ignace side of the bridge for travelers who choose to wait out the event before crossing. The event is free to all participants. Governor Rick Snyder will be in attendance and will offer a greeting just before the walkers begin at 7 a.m.
