General Election Overview: 51st House District

Oct 08, 2018

Through the general election on November 6, the MLC Blog will be highlighting races generally considered swing seats, ones either party could win because of the voter base.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

 District Overview

The 51st House District is located in Genesee and Oakland Counties.

 Commentary

Republican Representative Joe Graves is serving his final term in office, leaving this seat open. This Genesee & Oakland County seat has been trending more Republican in recent elections. It voted 59% for Donald Trump in 2016. Democrats are optimistic that former Linden Mayor David Lossing could be the golden ticket to flip this seat in November. After a competitive primary election, Republicans have a battle tested candidate in Mike Mueller working hard to keep this seat red. Democrats will need a significant “wave election” to put this seat in play on Election Day.

 Democratic Candidate:

  • David Lossing – Currently working on his dissertation for his Ph.D. in Higher Education Leadership, former member of the Linden City Council and former Linden Mayor, former Associate Director of State Outreach at the University of Michigan and former Director of Government Relations at the University of Michigan-Flint. Additionally, he worked as a regional director for Senator Carl Levin

Republican Candidate:

  • Mike Mueller – Works at the Livingston County Sheriff Department, previously worked at the Washtenaw County Sheriff Department, former substitute teacher, U.S. Navy Veteran
